Nucleophilic substitution and Alkyl Halide Solvolysis Labs

The benzyl chloride to benzyl alcohol lab works nicely, but I am having trouble with the butanol and 2-methylpropanol synthesis modules. The TLC is not showing any reactants, and the “work up” steps do not yield a product. Does anyone have suggestions on what I am missing?

Hi @mhender5,

You are referring to activities 4-1 and 4-2, correct? For a number of compounds in the Beyond Labz software, TLC spots are not shown. The compounds may be too volatile to remain on the TLC plate and evaporate very quickly, or they have a high affinity for the 20% ethyl acetate in hexanes developing solvent solution. Chlorobutane and 2-chloro-2-methylpropane both experience the latter, and are not shown on the TLC plate.

As I did the reactions myself, I was able to form the products (butanol for 4-2 and 2-methyl-2-propanol for 4-1) and extract them in the ether layer of the separatory funnel. You are not seeing the products in either layer? Please feel free to email me at kelsey@beyondlabz.com.
